 Grow Your Own Potatoes

Over the last few months, you may have noticed some big black backs sprouting leaves.  That is because school council have been taking part in Grow Your Own Potatoes.  GYOP was one of the first primary school-based growing projects which has now become one of the largest of its kind with over 6 million children taking part.  GYOP sends you the seed potatoes and instructions along with the important dates to follow.  In March, we received our potatoes and allowed them to 'chit' for 2 weeks before planting them.  This week we have harvested our potatoes.  Every school involved in the project plants and harvests on the same day.  The potatoes are then weighed – the heaviest harvest receiving a prize.

We had two types of potatoes – Carolina and Casablanca.  After harvesting and washing, we had 300g of Casablanca and 150g of Carolina potatoes.

Plastic Clever Schools

"An award to reduce waste with students at the heart of the action."

PCS has three stages; Inspire, Investigate, act; to help schools reduce plastic and become more 'plastic clever'.

School council has been working our way through stage 1: Inspire

Some of the children have been involved in a litter pick around Gringley-on-the-Hill. They have all been part of a school-wide assembly discussing some of the problems our world faces as a result of plastic and have thought about how plastic waste affects Gringley and the wider world as well as how the world would improve if plastic pollution was reduced.

Next step is to conduct a plastic audit of the plastic used around school.
